Online Launch Tijdschrift Kunstlicht: Spellbound

On June 11, Tijdschrift Kunstlicht hosted a livestreamed launch of its newest issue Spellbound. This issue focussed on rituals and magical practices within contemporary art and visual culture. In the video above, watch back an evening full of artists’ performances, a studio visit and two presentations from contributing writers, and hopefully a bit of enchantment.

The Magical theme related to ‘spells’ is understood in the widest interpretation possible, as something supernatural, something which goes beyond traditions of rationale or logic. And importantly, Magic also is understood in this issue as something which is at the heart of rationale and logic itself, undermining these epistemologies’ promised security. Why, when, and how do we cast spells? What spells do we need right now? The issue is filled to the brim with contributions answering, nuancing, and broadening our scope.

Tijdschrift Kunstlicht is an academic journal for visual culture. Three issues are published each year; two single issues and one double issue, each focusing on one specific theme. The journal was founded in 1980.

The language of this program is English.

This program was part of the Cultural Emergency Hospital of Felix Meritis: in 2021, we opened our doors to make our corona-proof facilities available to other cultural institutions or artists who were also struggling due to corona, but wanted to keep creating. To support that, we offered our facilities free of charge. That way, we allowed others to catch their artistic breaths right in the beautiful center of Amsterdam.

Online Lancering Tijdschrift Kunstlicht: Spellbound

Tijdschrift Kunstlicht lanceerde haar nieuwste editie, Spellbound, met een livestream op 11 juni. Deze editie van het tijdschrift onderzocht ritualen en magische praktijken in de hedendaagse kunt en visuele cultuur. In de video hierboven kijk je deze avond terug. Een avond gevuld met performances, een studiobezoek en twee essay-presentaties. Laat je betoveren door Kunstlicht!

Magie wordt – in de breedste interpretatie van het woord – begrepen als iets bovennatuurlijks, iets wat voorbij gaat aan de traditie van logica of rationeel gedachtegoed. Hier gaan we lijnrecht tegenin met deze editie. Magie wordt hierbij gezien als inherent verbonden met logica en rationaliteit, waardoor het de zogenaamde veiligheid en zekerheid van logica ondermijnt. Waarom, wanneer en op welke manier spreken we toverspreuken uit? Welke spreken hebben we op dit moment nodig? Spellbound is tot de nok gevuld met essays, kunstenaarsbijdragen en teksten die ons referentiekader verbreden en oprekken.

Tijdschrift Kunstlicht is een academisch tijdschrift gericht op visuele cultuur. We publiceren drie nummers per jaar; twee enkele edities en een dubbele editie. Deze edities focussen elke keer op een specifiek thema. Het tijdschrift is opgericht in 1980.

De gesproken taal van dit programma is Engels.

Dit programma was onderdeel van het Cultureel Noodhospitaal van Felix Meritis: In 2021 openden we de deuren en stelden onze faciliteiten corona-proof beschikbaar aan andere culturele instellingen of makers die het ook moeilijk hadden, maar zich niet uit het veld lieten slaan. Er kon bij ons worden gecreëerd zonder dat er kosten waren voor de faciliteiten. Zodat we samen vanuit het hart van de stad weer een beetje op adem konden komen.
