Wayang Kulit Performance Lecture & Workshop

Step into the world of shadow puppetry & South East Asian Ghost Folklore. Wayang Women is the only all-women wayang collective touring internationally, sharing and reimagining Wayang Kulit – an endangered art form – with audiences around the world. Now, they are coming to Amsterdam. Together they are bringing South-East Asian ghost folklore to you.
In this 2-hour interactive session, they present a unique combination of performance, lecture, and hands-on workshop. We begin with a short live wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performance, followed by an accessible introduction to the stories, symbolism, and cultural background of this ancient tradition. Then, you’ll join in: working in small groups, you’ll create simple puppets, learn basic manipulation techniques, and collaboratively perform a short scene, accompanied by live music. No experience needed: everyone is welcome. Come watch, listen, and take part.

Wayang Women is an all-women collective from Southeast Asia reimagining traditional shadow puppetry for today’s stage. Rooted in Wayang Kulit Kelantan, they combine live music, storytelling, and visual performance.
