Siri zou willen blozen en Alexa bedankt voor de feedback als gebruikers de virtuele assistenten uitschelden voor slet. De intelligente software die in onze telefoons, slimme huizen, smart speakers en auto’s leeft, is onderhand aardig ingebed in onze maatschappij. Maar met de beslissing van tech-bedrijven om deze zelflerende software vrouwennamen en -stemmen te geven en twijfelachtige interacties met de gebruikers voor te programmeren, keren we terug naar traditionele gender-stereotypes.

Tijdens het Ethisch Hacklab leer je van Klasien van de Zandschulp en Arjan Scherpenisse om zelf een script te schrijven voor de ‘slimme’ assistenten. Welk gesprek voert jouw slimme bot? Hoe ziet de uitwisseling eruit? Jij bepaalt zelf de conversatie en het taalgebruik. Met als resultaat een interactief gesprek met de Google Home of Google Assistent die je na afloop kunt presenteren aan je mede-hackers.

‘I’d blush if I could’

Siri would like to blush if she could, Alexa says ‘thank you for your feedback’ when being called a slut. The intelligent software that lives inside our phones, smart houses, speakers and cars are very much embedded in our daily lives. But when tech companies decided to program this self-learning software with female names and voices and other dubious interactions with their users, we return to traditional (and unfair) gender stereotypes.

In this workshop, given by Klasien van de Zandschuld and Arjan Scherpenisse, you will learn to write your own script for those ‘smart’ assistants. What kind of conversation will your smart bot have? You decide the script and tone of voice. The result will be an interactive conversation with the Google Home or Google Assistant that you can present to fellow hackers when finished.

Klasien van de Zandschulp

Klasien van de Zandschulp ontwerpt participatieve ervaringen gebaseerd op verhalen, waarbij digitale/fysieke en online/offline interacties worden gecombineerd. Ze is partner onderzoeker bij Institute of Network Cultures (NL, 2020), Sundance New Frontier Story Lab (VS, 2019) en gastonderzoeker bij het Artez Future Makers Institute – Designing for Precarious Citizens (NL, 2018, 2019). Van de Zandschulp won onlangs de IDFA DocLab Award voor Immersieve Non-Fictie.

Klasien van de Zandschulp designs story-based and participatory experiences, blending digital/physical and online/offline interactions. She is fellow at the Institute of Network Cultures (NL, 2020), the Sundance New Frontier Story Lab (USA, 2019) and guest researcher at the Artez Future Makers Insitute – Designing for Precarious Citizens (NL, 2018, 2019). Van de Zandschulp recently won the IDFA Doclab Immersive Non-Fiction award.

Arjan Scherpenisse

Arjan Scherpenisse is technisch mede-oprichter van Botsquad. Botsquad combineert de rijkdom aan traditionele vertelvormen met het gemak van chatten, waarbij menselijke interactie met automatisering en AI samenkomt en chatbots Conversational Apps worden. Arjan studeerde Kunstmatige Intelligentie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en hij behaalde de master Unstable Media aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie.

Arjan Scherpenisse is the technical co-founder of Botsquad. Botsquad combines the richness of traditional narrative forms with the convenience of chat, converging human interaction with automation and AI, transcending chatbots into Conversational Apps. He studied artificial intelligence at the University of Amsterdam and has a masters degree in Unstable Media from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.
