MAISON THE FAUX

(Nederlandse tekst onderaan)

Cradle, Nip, Go by MAISON the FAUX in collaboration with Dorian Wood, Arno Verbruggen, and Martha Gardner, is a performance and art installation in one. Produced by NITE in Groningen, exclusively on show in Amsterdam at House of CT.

MAISON the FAUX is “a creative studio posing as a grand couture fashion house”. The work of MAISON the FAUX is determined by their multidisciplinary approach and maximalist signature. MAISON the FAUX aims to create work that finds the perfect synergy between many creative arts; creating shows, plays, experiences, collections, spaces and much more, that invite audiences to be a part of the MAISON the FAUX universe.

This season, MAISON the FAUX is exploring new forms of fashion through experience, interaction and performativity within the RAW trajectory of NITE to create Cradle, Nip, Go. The performance dives deep into melted mythologies, exploring the concept of sacrifices.

CAST

Dorian Wood (she/her/they/them) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Los Angeles.

Using subject matter informed by her own perspective as a genderfluid brown person, a child of Costa Rican and Nicaraguan immigrants, and an autodidact, Dorian’s intent of “infecting” spaces and ideologies with her artistic practice is born from a desire to challenge traditions and systems that have contributed to the marginalization of people. Her work has been showcased in concert halls and performance spaces around the world, including at institutions like The Broad, REDCAT, Museo Nacional Del Prado, and Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris. From 2019 to 2020, she completed several successful tours throughout Europe, Mexico and the U.S. with her chamber orchestra tribute to Chavela Vargas, XAVELA LUX AETERNA. In 2022, Dorian debuted her tribute to the singer Lhasa De Sela, LHASA, at the Festival Internacional de Arte Sacro in Madrid. Dorian is the recipient of a 2020 Creative Capital Award and a 2020 Art Matters Foundation grant. She has released over a dozen recordings, most recently the albums Invasiva (2022) and 2020’s back-to-back releases ARDOR and REACTOR.

Arno Verbruggen (1997, Belgium) is a contemporary dancer and performer from Belgium.

Arno graduated from Codarts School of the Arts in 2019. They danced at Club Guy & Roni’s Poetic Disasters Club (Groningen, 2018 – 2019), Aura Danstheater (Kaunas, Lithuania, 2019-2020) and Zinderella by NITE/Maas theater en dans (On tour 2022). At the same time, Arno also worked as a teacher in physical theater and improvisation. Since 2020 Arno has been working as a freelancer, working with different companies, platforms and artists, within different art forms. They have worked with Maison the Faux (Arnhem) and Stef van Looveren, Action Zoo humain/Chokri Ben Chikha (Ghent) and Romeo Castellucci (Brussels) among others. In addition to being a performer, they have also been a creative on, for example, How to cope with a break up? #tuto, a solo work they made in 2019 for the Weekend Break Festival in Groningen. Here’s what they have to say about art: “Art is where my heart lies. I place Art on the same level as God and Art is the way to freedom and freedom is our sacred work”.

Martha Gardner (she/her) studied at The BRIT School of Performing Arts and Technology, before moving to Belgium in 2018 to study contemporary dance at The Royal Conservatoire Antwerp. Using the body as the primary medium, she is interested in the fusing of disciplines and genres to create things beyond boundaries and definitions. In England, she performed in Billy Elliot the Musical in the West End from 2011-2013, and later became a member of National Youth Dance Company, touring nationally with works by Damien Jalet and Sharon Eyal. Since graduating in Belgium, she has toured internationally with Needcompany in the production ‘Billy’s Violence’, alongside performing in creations by Sung Im Her and Alain Platel. She has also participated in various artistic video projects, including work by Harley Weir and Frederik Heyman, and has collaborated with fashion/graphic designers Julia Ballardt and Nico Verhaegen, integrating fashion, dance and visual art.

ABOUT NITE RAW is an innovative talent development trajectory by NITE (Noord Nederlands Toneel + Club Guy, and Roni), in which talented makers are guided to develop their artistry through research and experiment. Creators are encouraged to take risks, push boundaries, and explore different parts of their creative potential.
